Earlier this week, President Donald J. Trump signed the Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture (PACT) Act, H.R. 724, into law. The PACT Act had previously breezed through the House and Senate.
According to the Animal Wellness Action’s press release, the Act establishes “the first federal anti-cruelty law in American history.”
“We have a responsibility to honor the dignity of God’s creation,” said President Trump.“With today’s act, we take the critical step toward being more responsible and humane stewards of our planet and all who we want to cherish and take care of, and all of those who live on it.”
That statement’s inclusion of the word “steward” suggests that President Trump didn’t actually write that quote. But does being a “humane steward of our planet” include paying attention to climate change?
And does taking care of and cherishing all who live on this planet extend to Mexicans? Or ANY people of color? Or women, as we grab them by the pussy? Or the trans community? Or ANY of the LGBTQ community?
“We’re thrilled to see the first anti-cruelty statute in American history signed into law and applaud President Trump and the Congress for providing the voiceless with a level of protection never seen before,” said Marty Irby, executive director at Animal Wellness Action. “The PACT Act will allow federal authorities to crack down on the most egregious of animal abusers and help keep American pets safe from harm.”
That is really rich. I don’t “applaud President Trump” for anything. How about keeping American people safe from harm before worrying about our pets?
Now don’t get it twisted: I love animals and would never intentionally hurt one. I just had one of my dogs put down because she was suffering, and it broke my heart. Months later, I still walk into the house looking for her. And I understand that Irby’s just doing his job.
But how about keeping HUMANS safe from harm — maybe, oh I don’t know, at our southern border? The federal authorities haven’t appeared to have a problem “cracking down” on families there.
If our House of Representatives and Senate REALLY want to make a difference, they should IMPEACH PRESIDENT DONALD J TRUMP instead of patting themselves on the back for passing a pet torture bill. THAT would keep Americans safe from harm. They could really give the nation — the world! — a Merry Christmas, and send a strong message about what we’re willing to tolerate, and what we’re not.
